CfAT: The Second Scream

Media Release:

Who Did What, To Whom, When and Where?

Cairns, 26th October, 2015 – It is a brave world, where desperation will reduce even the sanest man to madness in a fascinating, bewildering, and hilarious noir murder mystery, but the real question still remains who screamed The Second Scream?

Presented by the Centre for Australasian Theatre (CfAT) and Kurandacoots, The Second Scream, by Australian playwright Graham Henderson, is a bizarre, courageous and comical reflection of the madness of our times.

Showing at the Centre of Contemporary Arts from Thursday, October 29 to Saturday, October 31, it is set in an unknown post-industrial location, and tells the tale of a motley crew of survivors whose only hope of escape lies in the mysterious contents of a potato, but not just any potato, the real potato.

Meet Dora, Lily, Scabmouth, Fleischman, Rainer and Slade as they reel from one startling revelation to another in this psycho-sexual thriller whose comic genius lies twitching across the febrile line between attraction and revulsion, arousal and disgust.

Australian actor and CfAT director Catherine Hassall described the work as visually striking, dense and exciting.

“The Second Scream brings together six of our region’s diverse performers in a mash-up of circus, cabaret, butoh, physical performance, music and slick retro-schlock dada in an exploration of voyeurism, narcissism and alienation.

“There will also be desire in a post-industrial, pre-apocalyptic vacuum where meaning is fluid, anything is possible, and everyone is desperate,” she said.

The performance, The Second Scream opens Thursday, October 29 at 8pm and will run three nights until Saturday, October 31. For more information or to book visit
