CLOCKED OUT: Time Crystals

Media Release:

Moves, Grooves and Generative Code

Cairns, 12th October, 2015 – Utilising a New Move Network residency at the Centre of Contemporary Arts, Cairns, Clocked Out will present its latest work Time Crystals in collaboration with the dulcet tones of projected light and dance from Bonemap.

Opening at the Centre of Contemporary Arts on Friday, October 16, Time Crystals is based on the Nobel-winning physicist Frank Wilczek’s 2012 article proposing the existence of Time Crystals.

He proposed that these time crystals were physical structures that moved in a repeated pattern, like minute hands rounding clocks, without expending energy or ever winding down.

Unlike clocks or any other known objects, time crystals derive their movement not from stored energy but from a break in the symmetry of time, enabling a special form of perpetual motion.

Clocked Out explore this idea of perpetual motion, pattern, and crystalline structures in musical form. Using an intricately designed constellation of percussion and piano sounds, Erik Griswold and Vanessa Tomlinson create a kaleidoscope of shifting sound colours.

“We are taking the idea of crystal shapes, angles and lattice structures that we can visualise and transferring that to sound design,” Griswold said.

Bonemap's designer Russell Milledge and choreographer Rebecca Youdell will traverse the notion of continuous movement and spontaneously broken symmetry, by processing live dance and Clocked Out's analogue music through a projected light system to radiate a sense of synaesthesia. This is where one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another.

"For Bonemap the work is evolving and there is an innate resonance with the Time Crystals theory, in that it remains experimental and is yet to be built,” Youdell added.

“We are aiming for a union of the senses and happy coincidences that composition and improvisation can provide.”

Time Cystals opens on Friday, October 16 and will run until October 17 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at
