GARY LANG BRINGS DANCE TO CAIRNS FOR NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS

 

Cairns, 3rd July, 2015 –Northern Territory’s most acclaimed Indigenous

dancer and choreographer takes residence in Cairns for NAIDOC week celebrations at the Centre of Contemporary Arts from July 6 to 12 .

 

Gary Lang will be an artist in residence at the Centre over six days. During this time he will be conducting a public dance masterclass at 6pm on Monday and developmental workshops with Biddigal Performing Arts, while also working on a new project with Rita Pryce and Baiwa Dance Company.

 

A proud Larrakia man, Gary trained at the National Aboriginal and Islander Dance School (NAISDA) and has toured nationally and internationally with some of Australia's premier dance companies, the Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre, Bangarra, Dance North and Tracks Inc.

 

Gary is a dynamic dancer, choreographer and performer and a much loved and revered figure in the NT dance community. He actively strives to maintain a strong cultural identity, acting as an ambassador for his culture through his practice.

 

His work in Cairns forms part of the Centre of Contemporary Arts New Move Network Dance Program, running throughout 2015 and 2016.

 

The Centre for Contemporary Arts continues to bring nationally recognised artists from around the country to Cairns to engage and inspire Far North audiences and artists alike.

 

Places are still available for the public dance masterclass on Monday at 6pm and the cost is $10. Dance level is intermediate to advanced. Dancers are asked to bring a water bottle and comfortable clothing. To book a place contact 4088 1010.
