Media Release:

Cairns, 11th August, 2015 â€“ Places are still available for local Cairns dancers who will be given the opportunity to work with some of the industry’s best at a special one-off workshop with Dancenorth tonight, August 11.

Those attending the workshop, which will be held at the Centre of Contemporary Arts (CoCA) on Abbott Street in Cairns from 6pm to 8pm, will join professional dancers for the two-hour training session.

The workshop coincides with the dance company’s latest work – In Two Minds, which will be performed later this week at CoCA on August 14-15.

In Two Minds is two distinct new dance works from three of Australia’s most exciting young choreographers.

Alisdair Macindoe’s Pre-emptive Requiem For Mother Nature will be presented first, followed by Syncing Feeling created by Dancenorth’s artistic director Kyle Page and choreographer Amber Haines.

Melbourne based Choreographer Macindoe said the magic of the organic world and physical phenomena often taken for granted is what inspired him.

“Birds, sunsets, waves crashing the impact of the wind all intrigue me and as a choreographer I am fascinated by the mechanics of the body and how we move in relation to our environment.”

First developed during a three-month residency in Varanasi, India in 2013, Syncing Feeling delves into the nature of empathy through a scientific lens.

“The work explores various avenues of scientific research including Theory of Mind, Metacognition and Mirror Neurons,” Page added.

At the workshop, participants will explore choreographic tasks and creative approaches that were used in the development of this exciting new work.

Workshops are open to dancers aged 15 and over and the cost is $10. Places can be booked by phoning 4088 1010.
