CoCA Presents: Camerata

Media Release:
Camerata

Cairns, 2nd May, 2017 – Contemporary meets classic at the Centre of Contemporary Arts this Wednesday, May 3 when the passionate string ensemble Camerata performs the world premiere of a composition inspired by the romance and charm of Jose Paronella’s Spanish castle at Mena Creek.

Bringing together new Australian music with great classical heroes is nothing new for Queensland’s chamber orchestra, Camerata, which is known for its adventurous programming.

Orchestra leader Brendan Joyce said the ensemble had commissioned Brisbane composer Michael Patterson to create the new piece.

Mr Patterson had travelled to Paronella Park, at Mena Creek near Innisfail, for inspiration. The story of Jose Paronella and his passionate project to build a Spanish castle in his adopted homeland by a waterfall amidst the Wet Tropics rainforest was a compelling story of love and sacrifice.

He said the ensemble’s musicians, who perform without a conductor, had established a reputation for passionate, exciting performances that engaged audiences of all ages, even those with little experience of classical music.

Camerata had been acknowledged alongside Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra with a nomination for the prestigious 2016 Helpmann Awards for Best Chamber and/or Instrumental Ensemble Concert.

Wednesday night’s premiere performance will also be the start of a regional tour that includes a school program and concerts in aged care facilities.

“It is such a privilege to be able to impact so many people in their home communities. I grew up in Ayr myself, so I understand something of both the good and challenging aspects of regional life,” Mr Joyce said.

Camerata’s Greatest (String) Hits tour will feature music from their CD recording of Iain Grandage’s When Time Stops, which received an impressive five-star review by Limelight Magazine. The program will also include music by Mozart,Mendelssohn, and Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5.

Tickets for Camerata are $29 for adults and $24 for concession and can be purchased online at www.artscairns.com.au or by phoning 40881010
